The talent of Cheryl Strayed shown in her book Wild was much of the reason that I recommended the purchase Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar. This is a collection of columns written by Strayed under the pseudonym of Dear Sugar. The Dear Sugar column had it’s origin on a literature community site called The Rumpus. The bulk of the articles are in the form of letters to Dear Sugar and her responses. Many of the letters are from teens and young adults. I didn’t have many of the problems with which Dear Sugar dealt, but I appreciated the empathy with which Dear Sugar deals with the problems of her readers. The amount of empathy shown is the thing that drew me to the bulk of these articles. You may disagree with the advice Dear Sugar gives to her readers, but we can learn a great deal about the compassion and empathy she shows to her readers. We could learn a great deal about dealing with the young people in our families from Dear Sugar.
